Mix it Up

23rd September 2009

As thrilled as I'm sure you all are to read about our day-to-day trivialities, I am pleased to be able to present you with something music related for a change. 'Soul Owl' will be the next single from 'The Greats and the Happenings' and while we're confident that our version is marvelous, we'd love for some of you to mix it up a little bit:

You can grab the stems from the Store on here, but cunningly our management have fixed it that you must also sign up to be a member of the site. When you've downloaded them they will be stored in your 'locker'. Don't be afraid. We promise not to spam you.

Please send all finished mixes to postwaryears@gmail.com and if it tickles our imaginations it will most surely be broadcast on myspace etc.

Muchos love.

H

Glorious Greetings

21st September 2009

Hello and Monday morning to you!

I have some vague ranting and/or things to tell you.

1) I like Dead Weather, you probably know them already but if you don't then it's Jack White's new thang and he plays the drums rather gloriously and with gusto to boot. I once met Mr White in the Old Blue Last in Shoreditch, he was most polite and f****ng cool, well done.

2) I like Elmore Judd, check out the tunes and that. I found the sound he uses on track two of debut album Insect Funk on my Casio, brilliant.

3) I went to the theatre, I didn't think I'd like it but went because my friend's involved AND it was her birthday, I actually really enjoyed it. Damn you preconceptions! The production's called Infinite Variety, the band is absolutely brilliant and the singing and dancing is more than entertaining. Go see it, it runs for seven weeks and it's at the New Players Theatre in Charing Cross.

4) This is a photo of two storm troopers and Darth Vader "getting down" at Bestival, absolutely made my day/week/life.

5) Goodbye!

Bonjour, Buon Giorno and Bon Jovi.

6th September 2009

Greetings,

I would like to start by saying I still absolutely bloody love Clor's eponymous debut album, why did they have to split up??? Damn shame. Would you call me a show off if I said I saw them live twice before their untimely demise? Yeah? Thought so. If you love Clor check out Barringtone. Can't go wrong.

I am sat in the Gossip cafe on Broadway Market, a personal favourite as I still have no internet in my flat and they serve good coffee, play good music and are generally well sound. Me likey. Currently there's some weird electro-ethnic-drum'n'bassy stuff on, haven't got a clue what it is but it's quite infectious. Like measles.

My friend had really bad measles as a child and is subsequently deaf in one ear. True story.

On Thursday we played at Vibe Bar as part of the South-East In East festival, it was well good. We had mondo technical difficulties with things like "electricity" and "stuff" (gotta love them city buzz-words!) but this didn't stop us from playing all the songs we originally intended to in the order we had carefully calibrated, nor did it stop the sun orbiting the moon and that in turn orbiting the Jupiter, if that even is what really happens...

So, we were only bloody lucky enough to be playing with Mercury-nominees The Invisible weren't we? And watching them I had a quasi-religious experience akin to that of seeing something truly great and really enjoying it. I hope they win even though my cousin is in also-Mercury-nominated band Led Bib, and I love him like family, which he is. Annoyingly it will probably be someone like Kasabian who win it, because they have a massive marketing budget. Originally we were supposed to win it but we turned them down as we thought it a little unfair to the competition. Maybe next year...

Also playing were Crystal Fighters, who should be a combination of Crystal Castles and the Foo Fighters, but actually just sound like the former, which is no bad thing. Jolly decent chaps but we couldn't watch the whole set as we had to be up early the next morning because...

We done a video! Friday and Saturday we filmed a vidyo for Soul Owl, which will be singled out from our obviously fantastic album (available for £9.99 [RRP] from all good record stores and online) and released like a dove of peace soon...

The dove from above.

We also DJed Friday night in Brixton and it was awesome. I was very tired and got-got really drunk. That's it really. Enjoyed a band called Fiction and props to the promoters Flu VS Earwax for putting on a good night!

Oh, one more thought to leave you with... Wave Machines @ Hoxton Bar & Kitchen on Wednesday 9th. Attend.

Goodnight,

Fred xxx

I still don't know how to use this blog thing properly. Luckily I do know WORDS.

Often, when writing songs, we try to use words to convey MEANING, meaning can then be interpreted and combined with data input from sounds received through the EAR to create BOOGIE. That's right; blame it on the boogie.

We have some new tricks up our sleeve - one involves a rabbit and an inordinate amount of hankies tied together to form a kind of hanky-rope. The other one's not as good.

In real news, we will be releasing SOUL OWL as some kind of crazy hip single and such, next week we're going to record a video for it so we can be on telly just like me dad said, BUY IT! It's not out yet.

Also we are playing VIBE BAR on BRICK LANE next week for the rather misleadingly titled SOUTH EAST IS EAST festival. This will be tenderly held like a rabbit in the arms of a toddler on Thursday the 3rd of September, come along and enjoy the pleasure of your own company.

I still can't work out how to upload pictures to this new-fangled gizmo but maybe Si will show me someday, for now I'm going to say BYE though.

Surely this doesn't need advertising:

(Just worked it out, yes!)

BYE!

Him indoors

9th August 2009

This week Post War Years played a lovely gig at Proud Galleries in Camden.

It were lovely. Right nice, I tell thee.

Unfortunately I got too excited and had to take last week off to recover.

So sadly, no news of the outside to report.

Instead, here's the best things I've done indoors:

GAME: Grand Theft Auto (IV)

I like to drive around like a responsible and respectful citizen. Stop at traffic lights. Let those pedestrians cross the road. After all, what's the rush? Life's less stressful if you sit back and relax.

Then when no one's expecting it... adjust the radio without paying due attention to the road, eat a sandwich while driving and break the speed limit on a major road.

Go on, home boy. You're living on the edge of society now.

TELEVISION: Charlie Brooker's 'You Have Been Watching'

Dead Davina - another Charlie Brooker masterpiece

If you haven't seen much of Charlie Brooker, you should watch his new show on Channel 4. It's a comedy quiz panel show which discusses the week's TV.

It's got real heart and provides moments of genuinely jaw-dropping television. Follow this link for (a bad quality) clip where the panelists discuss a leaked ITN report comparing the funerals of Michael Jackson and Princess Diana:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqSUc-PlGuo

Hurry, because it probably wont be up for long.  ITN have been trying to remove it from the internet. The bastards.

If that's gone, you can find a high quality version of the whole episode on 4OD here:

3. FILM: Pretty Woman

Is this enough money for me to sort out prostitution? Yes.

Julia Roberts' grim portrayal of life as a Californian prostitute is still as relevant today as it was in the early 90s. Tormented by her life of sub-standard shop service and snooty (yet ultimately warm-hearted) hotel managers, Roberts is given a shot at her own fairy tale ending by a chance encounter with Richard Gere's heartless corporate banker.

Luckily for both of them, she has an inherent appreciation for opera which both raises her 'common' aspirations and allows Gere to judge her worthy of human decency and respect.  Meanwhile, Gere learns there's more to life than money and saves a family business that builds real things (battleships) for real people (the US Navy)

Still, I got all weepy at the bit at the end where he climbs up her fire exit and that.

 See y'all soon!

Tom

A SEMINAL WORK OF GENIUS.

30th July 2009

Today my journey home was extended from under one hour to just over two. "How in God's clean kitchen is this possible?" you're probably wondering, and I don't blame you. The simple answer is this: public transport is on many an occasion rubbish. On the upside if I was walking I'd estimate the journey time at three and a half hours, plus maybe a coffee break halfway, so I've probably saved myself two hours there, but what does this achieve? The pain, anguish and humiliation of walking from one station to another, from one bus stop to the next, all of this could have been avoided if I'd decided to walk. Damn you legs! Alternatively I could have studied hard and got a job as a city banker, eventually resulting in my redundancy and therefore no need to leave the house, let alone worry about the journey home thereafter. Bonza.

Before I started moaning about travel I had intended to talk about our weekend: We had a good one. Playing Farm festival in Somerset on the Saturday followed by Redfest in Surrey on Sunday was liking turning honey into gold and then spreading it on your toast anyway. Runny gold.

At Farm I particularly enjoyed Ice Black Birds, Exlovers and DJ Vadim, as well as enough whisky to cause Tom to hiccup violently and incessantly for three hours, also Gav is a legend.

Redfest, organised by Oxfam's musical fundraising arm Oxjam, was highlighted for me by a fantastic set (mainly covers) by a band of incredibly talented twelve year olds, good work. It was also a pleasure to meet the Kabeedies and I'm sorry we couldn't stick around for their whole set, or that of The Whip for that matter.

On Saturday we are playing BE@PROUD in Camden, along with Laurel Collective and Modernaire. Come and dance to newly penned tunes about swine flu and other popular news items including Michael Jackson's death and Peter Crouch moving to Tottenham. Probably. Facebookers get on this for cheap entry: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=113245972126&ref=ts

That's all,

Love
