Bops and Cobbers [pt 1]

15th July 2008

Many hellos.

How are you? It’s been a whole month since we last spoke to you. We’ve been busy composing swirls of sonic sodabread in our sunny squat in spain. We have also occasionally been playing the odd gig in and around London. We have purchased some new samplers! I won’t bore you with the technical specifications of these wonderful devices, but needless to say; they have a flab load of flashing lights on, which instantly makes them better than banjos, ukuleles’, the common acoustic-guitar, or any other unfun instrument.

Festival Frolics:

Lounge on the Farm – Farm Fantasies and Flamboyant Fetishes

We are heading into festival season now, and we’re playing lots of the smaller boutique style affairs, which suits us nice! Kicking off with Lounge on the Farm in Kent, which is a nice wholesome family feast set in some Kentish countryside. Lineup looked good; Holy Fuck, Esser, Mystery Jets etc. We played an afternoon set, and were pleasantly surprised by a band called ‘Wave Machines’ who are from Liverpool. They put a single out on Chess Club, but we’d never seen them before, therefore we stuck about the stage for dancing, etc…

Aswell as seeing nuff good music, we did other stuff to prevent hangover boredom, which is common at festivals. Hangovers are boring like. Si walked around with a tent on his head, Fred formed a bin queue, the Corn Cops fought crime, we styled our hair like Bon Jovi and walked around pretending to be cool.

Erm, thats about it for now.

I’ll tell you more things next week…

Come to this if you can….

Mental Merryment and Sonic Supremacy…

14th June 2008

Recent Things and Other Stuff

Hello. Live performances and other such lark have slowed down now… and we can reflect upon a merryment of memories relating to touring round England in a postal van. However, we now have decided to retreat back into our carpet-box to create some ‘music’, or something. Which will be nice.

We have met many new friends including; seagulls, Kwes, Agathas’ family [and cats], cane trader, Royworlds’ massive chin, some ladies made out of ‘nylon’, Kinnsters, Magic Pete, John Ridgard, a pretend alien called ‘Zap’, 2002 Boyband “One True Voice”, and The Laurel Collective… amongst other musical minded mentalists.

Here is some stuff that happened…

New stuff NEW STUFF, new stuff that we like. Starting with Laura Groves… who is absolutely rather good at music…

Her recent single “I am Leaving” is apparently ‘twee’ according a magazine I read. Whatever… I saw this video live performance, which absolutely blew my hair into my left eyeball. [Click the link - ClickLink Yes]

And also – other stuff…

Vintage Bjork anyone?… This amazing version of ‘Unison’ from Vespertine is very, very beautiful. Fred blew 40 squadrons on the CD boxset the other day in rough trade, and we are contemplating a ‘Bjork Alldayer’ which will involve lying still on the floor and contemplating how amazing she sounds to our human eardrum[s].

Also, Henry, Tom and I declared our love for “Folk Music” together, secretly, at the Great Escalope festival in Brighton. We pranced around for a bit dreaming of being somewhere that was playing blips and bleeps and vocoder noises that we could dance to, and then… BLAM! In your Marcus Mumford Face, have that. This fellow Marcus, and his ’sons’ which I assume he fathered when he was around the age of 3; made us weep, and declare our love for real music that’s played on instruments made out of wood. By the time Laura Marling came on; we were drunkenly discussing trading samplers for washboards and growing beards and living on Branflakes and Lemon and ginger Tea…. Visit his MYSPACE now, his voice is ace.

A picture of them.. I Love it.

Finally, Have some bizarre mental gameboy spazz: Ratatatatat is good, stuff. “Mirando” IS THE BEST INSTRUMENTAL AMBIENT JAZZ you will hear for ages.

OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS:

This is happening…

Dollop Flyer

and it will be massively hot and sweaty, so get there early [if you are in London.. ie: Don't come all the way from Dallas Texas, or Krakow] It is also, surprisingly FREE, which means promoters who sell their bodies will be there?

Also: PWY Radio One: Live Session

We are Recording a Live Session at Maida Vale for Radio One “Introducing” next week, and I’ll let you know soon as snails when-abouts you can turn your radio on and hear it. We will be playing ‘False Starts’, ‘White Lies’, ‘Jacket On’ and maybe newer new stuff. Maybe. Huw Stephens will be there with his amazing beard!

That is all. Ta for being nice.

xx

Ps… come to the LATE OF THE PIER WARE HOUSE PARTY this Friday in Shoreditch, because it will be fun.

SINGLE RELEASE / PROUD MOTHERS / CHAP LOVING

1st June 2008

Blog 2 of 29292.

We are currently recovering from plenty of playing and proud pushing. We played a set at the Proud Gallery in Camden on Saturday – and had a great time… A strange but beautiful venue, with lots of smiling people and animals hanging about, we even got a stable to sit about in.

Then we ventured to The End last night to catch an inspired set by ‘The Chap‘, who’ve been one of our favourite bands since we picked up a copy of “Ham” a couple of years ago.

Some dribble oozed from my mouth as they threw themselves into “ooozing emotion”, I highly recommended catching them on their up and coming tour. Thank frac. Krakow. They are just one of those bands who get better and better and weirder with every record they put out….

What else?… Er, We did a Foals remix – I think everyone had a go. Ours sounds quite weird, I messed about with the guitars, trying to make them sound like church organs… Foals on church organs. It was actual fun. Have a quick bean below if you like…

Foals - “Eclectic Broom” – [Post War Years Gatefold Banjo Mix]

La lalala. Krakow.

We are playing the Mystery Jets album lots…. 2 Doors Down actually sounds like Tina Turner, a mindbabble of eighties sax solos and massive sheet metal snare drums. We dance around Jess’s room singing and waving our fists to it, you should join us.

Also, I will mention that our fantastical friends and musical-madnutters OFRACAS are releasing their album ‘Fits and Starts‘ on a cool label called ‘I can count’. This will blow up, it’s going to be a fabulous record, chek that jazz shazz. Here’s a smashing picture of their cool vase artwork….

GOOD NEWS: WE ARE RELEASING A RECORD.

Our first record will be out in the shops on 12th of May. It’s coming on a label called Chess Club who just happen to be cool and marvellous. 500 of these Mysterons produced vinyl-badboys are available.

We’ll let you know who will be stocking it soon… However, you can pre-order it here immediately from Rough Trade who will deliver it to you! They say this about the single, which is nice of them….

“‘the black morning’ is a fully formed and intricate pop song full of 80’s synths, smooth vocals and busy basslines. think part 80’s talking heads, part bowie and part gomez. they’ve got the tunes and the ability and are indisputably ones to watch in 2008. limited 7″ only” .

Nathan Fake + Eating Fruit + Tour + YAMB Artrocker Feature

12th May 2008

Tour Stuff…

Still a couple of dates to go ie: Ravensbourne Uni and The Great Escape…

Tour has been fab… we spent most of our time eating fruit in the van, playing cosmic golf in Leeds, going to aquariums in Hull, sleeping in crack-free Crack Dens in Darlington, admiring architecture in Bath, eating pies in Reading, cutting my fingers off at DURRR, and shopping for toiletries and underwear in Exeter…

Stuff in pictures….

Lights shining in patterns on a stage…

Lights Shining in Patterns on A Stage

A pigeon head statue somewhere…

Barbara Joined in, in a drunken fashion…

We recorded an Xfm radio session… Henry and Fred, hanging around…

Usually Henry gets packed in the van , in his box… Because he talks too much about boring stuff.

We left subliminal advertisements on the walls of dressing rooms…

I just like this painting of a cat…

We are currently blasting this stuff out…

We recently discovered Nathan Fake. He’s been around for ages, but we were slow to react, and only recently started to salivate all over the floor – We’ve been carfully slipping his track “Grandfathered” into DJ’ sets, as-and-when we get the chance. It’s the perfect ambient-electronic drunken hand-gliding song…

I’ve already blogged-off loads about the Chap’s new album – but it’s coming out tomorrow. We have been waiting for this album for years… the time has finally come.

Also, we have recently become big fans of James Yuill. His recent Chess Club single is being blasted out lots on Radio One, and his album “Turning Down Water for Air” is [to quote fellow Russian Club resident Jessica Lettuce...] “THE TITS”.

Anyhow, James Yuill’s musical compadre Jess [Not Jess Lettuce].. Bryant, also creates other stuff… Her music is part Bjork, part Nick Drake and part completely fantastic.

Jeff Bryant

Headbang your way through this snippet of her song “Belladonna”, and then decide you want to download all of her songs from her myspaz page….

Self indulgent news about us…

Our first single “Black Morning” was supposed to be out Today [12th May], but has been delayed for a week… this is a bit bad, but not completely bad, as it’s still coming out. Apparently, they are all stuck in Yugoslavia or something… Anyhow, if you have pre-ordered it… don’t frown, wear a dressing-gown – it will be on your doorstep soon! If you havent pre-ordered it… do so now by clicking this self explanatory link: I WANT TO PREORDER BLACK-MORNING FROM ROUGH TRADE NOW PLEASE

Also: Our song ‘You and Me Both” will soon be featured on the cover CD of Artrocker magazine, so you could probably grab a copy of that too.

RADIO LADIO….

We have also been played on the radio a bit…

Huw Stephens has been playing our single on his BBC Radio One show, which is fantastic. Ta, Huw x

And John Kennedy invited us in to do a session for Xfm which will be broadcast this Thursday [15th May]. We played four songs which were ‘You and Me Both’, ‘Black Morning’, ‘False Starts’ and a new one called ‘White Lies’.

Great Escalope..

We are playing the Great Escalope festival in Brighton this weekend, times are up on our facespace. We plan to run around all weekend seeing amazing music…. join us.

That’s it… bye.

Prickly Ears / McCamden Crawlface / Tellyradio

21st April 2008

Growling.

We’ve had a great weekend, Camden Crawl was ace. Add to that XFM and Radio 1 airplay and our video on MTV and you’ve got four happy PWY elephants.

Here is a Camden for you

Mothballs.

Even though everyone has blatantly heard them…I’ve gotta rave on about Does It Offend You, Yeah? Absolutely amazing… Saw them do a couple of tracks at Koko before we played over the road at the Purple Turtle, then saw them again on Saturday when they played NW1. I ended up with a somewhat swollen snozz from being head-butted in the face in the mosh pit. They absolutely owned both venues. Big tings a gwizzon.

Oh hi!

What, this old thing?

Sure.

Electronicness.

On Saturday we did a DJ set at the free Red Stripe bar before going to the Electric Ballrooms where I enjoyed Lo-Fi-Fnk, a Swedish duo from Sweden with the addition of an electric drum-kit drummer when they play live (trio). Change Channel is a great track. I actually knew it already because a DJ I know used to play it a lot, so it was a nice surprise when they started playing it.

And also…

White Lies…. great set…. Jack, you are one tight drummer, I’m gonna have to have words with you! My favourite track was the one that reminded me of Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears (also great track) but it’s not on the Myspace. Not to worry, for there is other stuff. Listen now though…. Unfinished Business is dead good, good.

Oh Good!

I’m eating Minstrels, must dash as I’m tireder than Mighty Mouse after a hard day at the office. You can stay here if you want, but don’t do anything naughty.

WOW and Welcome!

3rd April 2008

Announcing a blog is a bit like announcing the birth of a new child, you don’t know what it will turn out like, or how many gifts you will receive from your family. I have never had a child. Welcome to our new blog… The Russian Club, which will basically be about stuff that we have been up to, and things that excite our young male brains.

I am going to start by announcing the fact that we have just recorded a video for our first release which will be Black Morning… It was great funnish, and we learned how to mime. Miming is actually HELL. Not only did we have to mime, but we had to mime in slow motion. This turned out to be extremely difficult, yet incredible fun! The idea behind the video, was that director Christian [who is responsible for this quite impressive video] would record the footage at half speed, with us miming along.. like over exaggerating snail musicians, and then eventually speed everything up including the audio, to the original speed [Headfuck]. Meaning that basically, we will look like nutters. I’ll post up the video when the wonderful Christian has finished working his ass off editing it all together!

Here are some photos from the shoot, which was staged in a big warehouse on Old St, in London…. and turned out to be a scene of remarkable professionalism, eventually turning into whiskey swigging debauchery ya…

In other news, productional genius Oli Q, of mysterons fame remixed Blackmorning, twisting and squashing it into a massive fucked up house extravaganza. Download it for free, we asked him, he said it was cool… click that linkage…

also… were DJing at Communion at Notting Hill Arts Club in London on Sunday [6th Apr] should you be hanging about somewhere…. far from just asking you to come down and watch us fuck around drunkenly with some weird prince records, we’d much rather you come down to watch a live performance by Alessi who is amaaazingly good.
